Cork, just inland from Ireland’s southwest coast, is a university city with its centre on an island in the River Lee, connected to the sea by the huge Cork Harbour. The hilltop steeple of 18th-century Shandon Church (officially St. Anne’s Church) is a symbol of the city. Visitors who climb its tower are rewarded with sweeping views, and can play the church’s bells.
